Aromatherapy works in 2 different ways.
- Firstly, the oil penetrates the skins surface and gets into the bloodstream. This is then pumped around the body. The natural chemical composition of the oils can do their work on the systems of the body.
- The second way is through smell. When you breath in the aroma of the oil, it is taken through the Olfactory System to an area of the brain called the Limbic System. This is the most primitive part of the brain and is where our emotions and natural impulses live. Some smells may trigger a memory or feeling without us consciously recognising it. This is why any oil can reduce stress and the oil used is such a personal choice. Certain oils can also chemically affect the brain. A good example of this would be Jasmine. Jasmine physically changes our Alpha brainwave patterns and is used as a mood enhancer!
Aromatherapy is not a matter of faith but a matter of science. The validity of Aromatherapy is only just starting to be recognised by the medical profession. Aromatherapy works very well in conjunction with western medicine and I applaud GP's and other professionals who recognise this.
