This tree originates from the Middle East and some areas of Asia such as China. Incisions are made in the bark which allows the resin to seep out in yellow drops from which the oil is distilled.
Frankincense was burnt at alters in Egypt as an offering to the Gods and was also used as an aid to meditation. This practise is still used today in some religions. It has also been used throughout time to fumigate the sick in a bid to banish evil spirits.
The Hebrews and Egyptians so valued Frankincense that its value was only a little less than Gold. It is for this reason that it was gifted to the infant Jesus.
Whilst the Egyptians understood its uses for the mind, they also used Frankincense in rejuvenating cosmetic masks. The Chinese would also use Frankincense to treat a number of conditions including Leprosy.
