Wheatgerm - Carrier Oil of the Month March 2004

Properties
Latin Name Triticum Vulgare
Plant Type Wheat
Part Used Germ
% used in massage blend 10%

Wheatgerm oil is either warm pressed or solvent extracted. It is very thick with a pungently strong earthy odour and is difficult to mask in a blend.

Wheatgerm is incredibly high in Vitamin E and is therefore useful for all dry skin conditions including eczema and flaky dry skin. It is also said to be useful for preventing the development of varicose veins and for reducing the appearance of scar tissue.

Lastly, this oil is used by some aromatherapists to prolong shelf life of blends. This is a contentious issue on which the industry is split. I personally have reservations and favour using pure vitamin E to prolong shelf life. I have also found that by using Fractionated Coconut Oil as the carrier, it holds the aroma slightly longer.

  Cautions

Can cause allergic reaction in some. Avoid if wheat intolerant.
