  Making a Massage Blend

A massage blend consists of essential oils diluted in what we call, a carrier oil. You must always dilute an essential oil before putting directly onto the skin with the exception of Tea Tree and Lavender. Please read the cautions attached to the essential oils before use.

The number of mls of carrier oil is halved to find out the number of drops of essential oils to use e.g. 20mls of carrier oil + 10 drops of essential oils. Never exceed this.

Generally, 3 or 4 essential oils are blended together with carrier oils. You would use for instance, 3 drops of each oil to make up your 20ml blend. I like to use 3 different oils, a base, middle and top note for my blends. This is called a 'synergistic' blend. The word synergy means 'work together'. Synergistic blends are often the most effective blends.

Halve the number of drops stated when making a blend for:

  • Elderly or frail people
  • After illness (any age)
  • Weakness of any kind
  • Clients under emotional strain
  • Sensitive skin
  • Halve the amount again for children up to the age of 13

Always test blends on the person they are being made for before use. This is to check that they are not allergic to the blend.
