Start off with your partner laying on their front. Cover them with one or two towels. Before putting any oil or your hands, place one hand on the base of their spine and the other hand on the back of their head. Breathe deeply and get your partner to do the same. Try to breath in unison with them and relax.

Never massage directly over the spine.

If you are giving a massage on the floor, you can sit straddling your partner's thigh.

    Repeat 3 times.

Carry out the same move as before, but this time, when you reach the neck, fan out your hands firmly across the shoulders then glide your hands down.

Repeat as many times as you want.

Glide your hands firmly up the lower back.

When you reach the shoulder blades, circle the area with flat hands.

Continue circling while returning to the start position.

  4. Glide your hands firmly up the back. Knead the shoulders with your fingers and thumb. Be careful not to do this on the neck. Then start kneading with your palms and gradually work down the back on either side of the spine.

    Repeat 3 times.

  5. Click to see sequence
Apply small circular movements to the muscles either side of the spine with your thumbs.

Move up gradually until you reach the neck.

Glide your hands down the back to the position in which you started.

Glide your hands up to the shoulder blades.

Massaging the back of the legs

  1. Click to see sequence
Oil your hands. Starting on the left leg, effleurage up the leg, going lightly over the back of the knee, up to the top of the thigh.

Return by gliding slowly and gently back down the leg, taking care at the back of the knee.

    Repeat 3 times.

  2. Click to see sequence
Using your thumbs, apply friction to the calf muscles; stop when you reach the start of the knee.

Never apply pressure to the backs of the knee.

  3. Click to see sequence
Knead the calf muscles moving up the leg to the thigh.

Glide over the back of the knee with little pressure.

Knead gently on the inner thigh becoming firmer when reaching the outer thigh.

  5. Repeat on the other side.

Massaging the front of the legs and feet

  1. Click to see sequence
Your partner should now be lying on their back. Oil your hands and effleurage the whole leg.

Do not apply pressure over the knee and shinbones, as this can be painful.

    Repeat 3 times.

  2. Click to see sequence
When you reach the thigh, start kneading the outer thigh with the palm of your hand.

Omit this movement if your partner has very hairy legs, it really doesn't feel nice for you!

Cover the outside and the top of the thigh.

  3. Click to see sequence
Next, try a picking up movement on the thigh.

Imagine the thigh is separated into 3 sections.

Work over each section 3 times.

    Repeat on each toe.

  8. Click to see sequence
Move onto the sole of the foot.

Starting at the heel, use the thumbs in a windscreen wiper movement, moving up the foot gradually.

You must use enough pressure for it not to tickle.

Repeat as many times as you want.

  9. Click to see sequence
Starting at the ball of the foot, apply pressure horizontally along the sole of the foot.

One thumb should be above the other one.

    Gradually work up the foot.

Repeat as many times as you want.

  10. Click to see sequence
Clasp all the toes with one hand and bend them gently, moving backwards and forwards.

You can support the foot with the other hand placed under the heel. This improves flexibility.

  11. Effleurage the foot 3 times

  12. Repeat on the other leg.
  Massaging the arms and hands

  1. Click to see sequence
    Oil your hands.

With your partner's arms resting by their side, effleurage the whole arm, circling over their shoulder before returning to their wrist.

    Repeat 3 times.

Using your thumbs, knead the forearm.

Use your palm to knead their upper arm.

  3. Effleurage the whole arm (Same as Step 1).

  4. Click to see sequence
Use your hands to support your partner's wrist.

Circle over the bony prominence on their wrist.

  5. Click to see sequence
Glide your hand down to their thumb.

Massage the thumb, starting at the base, gradually moving upwards.

    Repeat on all the fingers.

  6. Click to see sequence
Turn over their hand so that the palm is facing upwards.

Use your thumbs to massage the palm, paying special attention to the pad at the base of the thumb.

  7. Click to see sequence
Using one thumb on top of the other, apply pressure to the hollow dip in the centre of the palm. Hold for a few seconds and release.

This is an acupressure point called the 'Palace of Anxiety'. This is particularly good to do if your partner is stressed out.

  8. Click to see sequence
Stroke the hand. Sandwich your partner's hand in-between yours. Hold for a few seconds then slide your hands away very slowly.

  9. Repeat on the other side.

  Massaging the abdomen

A lot of people don't like having their abdomen touched. Check with your partner before you do this. Only use very light pressure on this area.

  1. Click to see sequence
    Oil your hands.

Place your hands gently over the navel and hold them there for a few seconds.

This allows your partner to get used to being touched there.

  2. Click to see sequence
Using an arrowhead motion, start below the navel with fingers pointing towards your partners head.

Then move your hands using flat palms up over the navel.

Turn your wrists to face the outside of your partner and move your hands to their side and back down to the starting position

  3. Click to see sequence
Massage the whole belly gently using your whole hand.

Always massage this area in a clockwise direction.

This is because the colon works in that direction. Repeat several times.

  4. Click to see sequence
Place your hand over the navel and hold for a few seconds to finish.

  Massaging the chest and neck

Never massage directly over the throat. Don't apply pressure to the sides of the neck. There are too many major veins and arteries for this to be safe.

  1. Click to see sequence
Position yourself at the top of your partner's head. Start by effleuraging the breast bone towards the shoulders. Let your hands glide around the shoulders and up the back of the neck. Repeat this several times.

  Massaging the face and scalp

When massaging the face, you must use minimal pressure. Any moves carried out with a finger should be done by the ring finger and not the index finger.

  1. Click to see sequence
Start off with an effleurage move. This can be done by cupping your partner's chin.

Then glide your hand up their cheeks.

When you reach their nose, follow the move using your fingertips up the bridge and across their forehead with the whole hand. Do this 3 times.

  2. Click to see sequence
Using the whole of your flat hand, smooth the forehead in the direction of their eyebrows towards their hairline.

    Repeat several times.

  3. Click to see sequence
Using gentle thumb pressure, start between you partner's eyebrows. Apply pressure right the way along their forehead.

When you have done that, move your thumbs above the area you have just massaged in the centre of their forehead. Repeat the pressures. Move up a thumb width until you reach their hairline.

  4. Click to see sequence
Using your palms in the centre of the forehead, smooth towards the ears.

    Repeat several times.

  5. Click to see sequence
Glide your hands down the side of the face.

Starting from the bridge of the nose, smooth below the eye socket using your ring finger (if this is not comfortable, use your second finger).

    Repeat several times.

  6. Click to see sequence
Starting at the bridge of the nose, smooth underneath the cheekbone gently with your thumb.

    Repeat several times.

  7. Click to see sequence
Glide your hands up the side of the face to the centre of the hairline.

Using circular movements, massage the scalp.

Start at the hairline and gradually move backwards.

Make sure you are moving the skin gently over the bone and not just the hair.

  8. Click to see sequence
When you have reached the back of the head, run your fingers through the hair to the tips. Move forward until you reach the hairline at the forehead.

  9. Glide your hands down to the chin and finish with the effleurage move used to start.
