Acupuncturists, Shiatsu Therapists and Reflexologists all believe that the energy which runs through the body, flows in channels called zones or meridians. Reflexologists specify that there are 10 zones running throughout the body, 5 on each side of the central line. All of the organs and glands lie on 1 or more zones. Each zone channels the live energy or life force known as 'Chi' in oriental medicine.
Using the fingers or thumbs to apply pressure to any part of the zone will stimulate the entire zone. We don't completely understand how the zones are controlled but there are some sound theories.
Good health depends on the body's equilibrium, when the body is put under stress then the balance is disrupted, and the body then becomes unhealthy.
Reflexology reduces stress levels by relaxing the body, allowing the nervous system to function normally, and for the circulation to flow freely. When the body returns back to a state of homeostasis (balance) then the healing process can begin.

The feet are a microcosm of the body; all the organs, glands and other parts are laid out on the feet in the same arrangement as in the body.
Reflexology is carried out on the feet rather than the hands. This is because of the abundance of nerve endings found on the feet. Also, as they are enclosed in shoes most of the time, they have not become desensitised through walking! The feet are also the furthest point from the heart. People with poor circulation are inclined to have cold or swollen feet and the treatment encourages blood flow to the extremities.
